Haul-Out Yacht Survey Spain

A haul-out yacht survey in Spain allows the surveyor to inspect the underwater hull and appendages when the yacht is lifted or placed ashore.

For a pre-purchase yacht survey, haul-out is strongly recommended because many important defects cannot be properly assessed while the yacht is afloat.

Why Haul-Out Matters Before Buying a Yacht?

The underwater part of a yacht can reveal important information about maintenance, structural condition, previous damage and repair quality.

Without haul-out, the buyer may not be able to properly assess the hull bottom, keel, rudder, propeller, shaft, saildrive, anodes, through-hull fittings or visible signs of osmosis and grounding damage.

What Is Inspected During Haul-Out?

A haul-out yacht survey may include visual inspection of:

  • Underwater hull.

  • Keel and keel joint.

  • Rudder and steering appendages.

  • Propeller.

  • Shaft or saildrive.

  • Anodes.

  • Through-hull fittings.

  • Seacocks.

  • Bow thruster area.

  • Hull coatings.

  • Antifouling condition.

Hardstanding Yacht Survey

When the yacht is placed ashore on hardstanding, the surveyor can carry out a more controlled inspection of the hull, appendages and accessible external structure.

Hardstanding is especially useful when the yacht needs more time out of the water for closer examination, moisture readings, osmosis verification or repair scope assessment.

During hardstanding, the surveyor may check:

Osmosis Verification and Moisture Readings

Osmosis verification is an important part of a pre-purchase yacht survey for GRP and fibreglass yachts.

The surveyor may carry out visual inspection and moisture readings to identify possible moisture retention, blistering, laminate defects or coating failure.

Moisture readings must be interpreted carefully. Recent haul-out, rain, washing, antifouling condition, hull coatings and drying time can affect the readings.

For a more reliable assessment of osmosis, the yacht may need to remain ashore for an appropriate drying period.

A short lift or brief haul-out can identify visible signs of osmosis, but it may not be sufficient for a complete osmosis diagnosis.

How Long Does Haul-Out Need?

The required haul-out time depends on the vessel size, shipyard availability and survey scope.

For some inspections, a short lift may be enough. For more detailed checks, the yacht may need to remain ashore for several hours or longer.

For a complete osmosis investigation, additional drying time may be required before reliable moisture interpretation can be made (usually four days).
