Sea Trial for Pre-Purchase Yacht Survey

A sea trial is an important part of a pre-purchase yacht survey, as it allows the yacht to be tested under operating conditions.

While a static inspection can identify many visible defects, a sea trial helps observe how the yacht performs underway.

Why Is a Sea Trial Important?

A yacht may appear to be in good condition when berthed or ashore, but operational issues may only become apparent during a sea trial.

A sea trial may help identify vibration, steering problems, engine performance concerns, overheating, abnormal noise, instrumentation issues, autopilot concerns, bilge behaviour or handling problems.

What Can Be Observed During a Sea Trial?

Depending on the yacht and agreed scope, the surveyor may observe:

  • Engine start-up.

  • Engine operating temperature.

  • Engine alarms.

  • Gear engagement.

  • Exhaust behaviour.

  • Vibration or abnormal noise.

  • Steering response.

  • Autopilot behaviour.

  • Navigation instruments.

  • Bilge pump activity.

  • Generator operation where applicable.

  • Sailing performance where applicable.

  • Winches and deck equipment.

  • General yacht handling.

  • Manoeuvring under power.

Engine and Propulsion Observations

During a sea trial, the surveyor may observe engine behaviour under operating conditions.

This may include start-up, temperature, alarms, vibration, gear engagement, exhaust flow and general performance.

A sea trial is not a full mechanical diagnosis unless a specialist engineer is appointed, but it can identify visible or operational signs that require further investigation.

Sailing Yacht Observations

For sailing yachts, the sea trial may also include general observations of sails, rigging operation, winches, deck hardware, helm response and handling under sail where conditions allow.

This is not the same as a full rigging inspection aloft, but it can provide useful operational information before purchase.

Sea Trial Limitations

A sea trial is an operational observation conducted as part of the broader pre-purchase yacht survey process.

There is no guarantee that all machinery, systems, or structural issues will be detected.

The results should be read together with the static inspection, haul-out findings, documentation review and final survey report.

Technical Summary

A sea trial for a pre-purchase yacht survey in Spain helps buyers observe the yacht under real operating conditions before completing the purchase.

It can support the inspection by identifying performance, vibration, steering, machinery, instrumentation and handling concerns.
